BU00821: Fishing at Whitby
| Bede made the first reference to fishing boats at Whitby in 654AD, when Princess Aelfleda of Whitby Abbey set sail in one to visit St. Cuthbert. So it is assumed that the fishing industry was already quite well established by this point in time.
Whitby is particularly famous for its whaling fleet. Whale products were used for various purposes. Whale oil was used for street lighting and the flexible whalebone was used for all sorts of things, such as the stays in a corset and whalebone hairbrushes. |
