Harrogate, Opera House

Opera House
The Opera House was opened on 13th January 1900 with an entertainment provided by the Mayoress of Harrogate, Mrs. James Myrtle, followed by an evening production of Dick Whittington. It became a repertory theatre in 1933 with its own company the White Rose Players. It closed for three years in 1955 and reopened on 27th October 1958.

                

Georgian Theatre, Church Square
Theatre bill for the ’Clandestine Marriage’, performed 15th August 1796 at the Georgian Theatre, Harrogate.

Samuel Butler built the Georgian Theatre around 1788. It was closed about 40 years later and converted to a private house in the 1830s.

Town Hall Theatre, Swan Road, Harrogate c.1900: PH201-16

Town Hall Theatre, Swan Road
Converted to a theatre in 1882, the D’Oyly Carte and Lily Langtry appeared in the 1880s. The Theatre closed in the 1890s.

Kursaal/Royal Hall, Ripon Road
This theatre opened on 27th May 1903 as the Kursaal, and changed its name during the First World War due to anti-German feeling. Harry Lauder, Little Tich, Pavlova, John McCormack, Sarah Bernhardt, Ellen Terry, Sir Edward Elgar were among the many celebrities to appear.

Empire Theatre, Harrogate September 1927: PH154-11

Empire Theatre, Cheltenham Mount
The Empire Theatre was opened in 1910 as both theatre and cinema. It was adapted from a church built in 1872, and closed in the late 1920s. The premises have since been used as shops, but it is now a restaurant.

Scala Cinema, Cambridge Street
The Scala Cinema opened on 4th October 1920 and changed its name to the Gaumont in 1950 and was demolished in 1962.
