Dales farming families were mostly self-sufficient - milk, wheat, vegetables, cheese, butter and eggs would all be produced on the farm. Oatmeal for havercake was bought in sacks.

Peat was the main fuel used in the Dales, supplemented by coal from small local pits. Candles were used for light and later paraffin lamps were adopted.

All cooking would be done on the open range. Later ranges incorporated a boiler for hot water.

Many farmhouses stand close to becks or springs to ensure a good water supply. Externally, many farmhouses retain their traditional design in which house and cowshed or haymew were under one roof.
