Hand milking, West Stonesdale Moor, 1964 BU05650b

Mr Horner, Middleham with a backcan: BU05270

Milk backcans: DCM0022
| In the summer months, cows were milked in the fields and the milk would be transported back to the farmhouse in backcans.
Butter and cheese were made from the milk - one gallon of milk was needed to make one to one and a half pounds of cheese. In the winter, cows were milked in barns. Today cows are milked all year round in milking parlours.
