The following is an extract from the unpublished ’Annals of Harrogate and Pannal 1066-1886 Volume 2’, written by William Grainge in 1886.

"The first establishment of this kind in Harrogate was opened in January 1872. It was built by the late Stephen Witham of Stafford House. It was not of great extent, yet the Turkish and other baths used in that kind of treatment of disease were there. The building comprised only the baths and a house for the attendant. It was situate in Park Road, continued for two or three years, and was then formed into a dwelling house.

The Harrogate Hydropathic Establishment was founded in 1872, by a joint stock company, who purchased the Swan Hotel, enlarged, refitted, and adapted for the new purpose by the erection of a complete suite of Baths, and it has been three times enlarged since, so that it is now a building of gigantic proportions; and occupying a
fine commanding situation, and nicely situated in its own grounds, it has become a public favourite. It is possessed of all the appliances and conveniences found in such establishments and is most extensively patronised.

The Imperial Hydropathic Establishment is situate on Royal Parade, near the Old Sulphur Well, is the next in point of age and was started in 1880. It is of the same class as the other, but on a much smaller scale, and is owned and conducted by a physician resident on the premises.

The Connaught Hydropathic Establishment is the youngest of its kind and is situate near the bottom of Cold Bath Road."
