Concerts The Open-air Theatre was opened in Scarborough after golfers noted the excellent acoustics in the area. The 8,000-seat arena saw many productions between 1932 and 1968 by the Scarborough Amateur Operatic Society, including performances of Merrie England, Carmen and West Side Story
George Royle, a successful Scarborough beach entertainer, was asked to provide the entertainment in the Floral Hall when it opened in 1911. The Fol-de-Rols were formed specially. They were a Victorian style troupe and proved very popular with visitors. Their success was cut short by the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Will Catlin was an innovative businessman, and was among the first to employ modern publicity methods to promote his Pierrots. He had several troupes that would perform on the beach four times a day. Postcards showing the Pierrots were sold at performances and a troupe would meet newly arrived holidaymakers at the station each weekend to publicise the shows.
