| | Grand Hotel Building work began on the Grand Hotel in Scarborough in 1863, and after some delays, was completed in 1867. It was the largest brick building in Europe and was a ‘calendar’ building, with 365 rooms, 52 chimneys and 12 staircases. In its heyday, the Grand had many famous visitors, including Winston Churchill who had a suite named after him.
Ardlui Hotel The Ardlui Hotel opened on the West Cliff in Whitby in the 1930s. It could accommodate up to 75 guests in 25 bedrooms and in its advertising the proprietors are very proud of their ‘competent chef’ and ‘hot and cold running water in every room’. The hotel ceased trading in the 1950s and has now been converted into flats.
Pavilion Hotel The Pavilion Hotel in Scarborough is not on the seafront, but still attracted many loyal customers. In the 1930s, it promised visitors fine cuisine and extensive facilities, such as running water, bedside lights and bells in every room, and two tennis courts.
