| | Work on the farm has traditionally involved the whole family. Every member of the family, from grandparents to small children, would have their own chores to perform and would do their share of labour on the farm, caring for livestock, going to market and maintaining home, buildings, land and equipment. At the busiest times of year, such as lambing or haymaking, all members of the family would work long hours to ensure a good yield. It was very common for children to miss school so they could help out on the farm. Sometimes schools would even be closed while this work went on.
