Rural Workforce: Not Just Farming

Farmers are not the only people who work in rural areas. Many other trades and professions are essential to the rural community – blacksmiths, tinsmiths, shopkeepers and publicans to name a few. The postmen in rural areas deliver mail every day, whatever the weather, just as they do in the towns, but they may have to endure harsher conditions on the more isolated and exposed routes.

North Yorkshire contains two of the UK’s eleven National Parks. These Parks were set up in the 1950s to conserve the natural beauty, wildlife and historic features of the area, while helping visitors to understand and enjoy its special qualities. The National Park Authorities play a huge role in conserving the environment and familiar landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and Moors by ensuring that land is used properly, habitats are protected, heritage features are maintained and footpaths are kept in good repair.
