Inns were a vital part of the coaching network. They provided refreshments and lodgings for passengers, as well as stabling and changing the horses that pulled the coaches. Even though the coaching era was ended by the advent of the railways, many coaching inns still survive today, such as the Yorke Arms and Golden Fleece.

| | Once the roads were improved, the popularity of the stagecoach increased dramatically. The stagecoaches of the early nineteenth century could reach speeds of up to 14mph, which would have been unthinkable only a few years earlier.
